How to Refer Your Patient

Important Note to Referring Physicians

Patients with acute leukemia, Burkitt's lymphoma and lymphoblastic lymphoma should be considered hematologic emergencies and referred by direct discussion with the Triage Physician or On-Call Staff Physician.

Referring physicians should feel free to call the Program Office directly at 604-875-4863 if they want to discuss a patient or their urgent management.

To Make a Regular Referral

A referral to the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program can be initiated by a family doctor or by a specialist physician. A complete referral package includes:

  1. A referral letter
  2. Accompanying documents on the patient
  3. A completed Leukemia/BMT Patient Referral Form.

Our Triage Procedure

One of the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Staff Physicians is assigned to be the Triage Physician for the calendar month. The role of the Triage Physician is to review all faxed referrals promptly, and assign a level of urgency to the referral. This triage process does not take place on the week-ends and holidays. If your referral is urgent, click here to see how to handle Urgent Referrals.

A scheduling clerk assigns an appointment at the Doctors' Clinic with the first available Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Staff Physician. Every effort is made to see new patients within 2-3 weeks.
