The Leukemia/BMT Program provides advanced training in the management of adults with leukemia, myeloma and other malignant hematological disorders as well as all aspects of allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Approximately 150 to 200 transplants are performed per annum, and 85 to 120 newly diagnosed patients with leukemia are treated. Most patients are treated on clinical research protocols, some of which are developed in collaboration with staff of the Terry Fox Laboratory.
The medical staff team consists of the Program Director, Dr. Clayton Smith, twelve additional attending Leukemia/BMT Hematologists, and three General Practitioners in Oncology. In addition to the Leukemia/BMT Fellows and General Hematology Fellows, a number of Residents in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology also rotate through the Program.
The Leukemia/BMT Inpatient Unit has a total of 26 beds, with 12 private rooms and 7 semi-private rooms containing 2 beds each. The Inpatient Unit is located on the 15th floor of the Pattison Pavilion tower in the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and used primarily for the treatment of patients with acute leukemia and those undergoing allografting. Laboratory marrow manipulation related to the Program is carried out in the adjacent Terry Fox Laboratory at the British Columbia Cancer Agency. The out-patient facility - Medical Intervention Clinic and Outpatient Doctors' Clinic - is located at the Vancouver Hospital.
The University of British Columbia provides office space for Medical Staff, Fellows, BMT Coordinators, Data Coordinators, Administrative Manager, Computer Programmer Analyst and Secretarial Staff at the Vancouver Hospital.
